GOLF: UCA's Smith finishes fifth; Harding's Banger finishes sixth; Arkansas Tech women seventh in Texas

University of Central Arkansas freshman Miles Smith finished tied for fifth Tuesday at the Atchafalaya Intercollegiate played at The Atchafalaya at Idlewild in Patterson, La.

Smith shot rounds of 71-76-75 for a 6-over 222 to lead the Bears to a sixth-place finish in the 10-team tournament. Rodrigo Rivas shot 225 (74-78-73) and tied for 12th overall.

As a team, Central Arkansas shot a 913 (297-318-298). Texas-Rio Grande Valley won the tournament with an 881.

Harding's Banger finishes sixth

Harding University senior Mason Banger shot an even-par 72 in the third round of the Newberry College Invitational at the Ocan Course in Kiawah Island, S.C., on Tuesday to finish tied for sixth in a field of 96 players. The event was played at The Ocean Course, site of the 1991 Ryder Cup.

Banger shot 71-74-72 to finish at 1-over 217, eight strokes behind the winner, Gideon Van Der Vyver of Columbus State, who shot 7-under 209.

For Banger, it was his 10th round of par or better this season and his fifth top-10 finish in six tournaments.

As a team, Harding finished 15th with a 924. Columbus State was the team champion, shooting an 857 and defeating South Carolina-Aiken by eight strokes.

Arkansas Tech women seventh in Texas

The Arkansas Tech University women finished seventh at the St. Edward's Spring Invitational in Austin, Texas, on Tuesday.

The Golden Suns finished with a 623 (319-304). Tarleton State won with a 606 (299-307).

Individually, Arkansas Tech's Pia Nunbhakdi finished 11th with a 152 (77-75).
