FORT SMITH -- Albert Reidy of Magazine was jailed here yesterday by W. O. Henry, deputy United States marshal, on a charge of speaking disrespectfully of the president. It is alleged that in a discussion over the national liquor question Reidy accused President Wilson of advocating dry America and is alleged to have wished death to the president. It is also charged that he said that if he had $1,000,000 he would give it to the kaiser. Reidy denies making the statements.

• A resolution for a study on the proposed merger of Little Rock University and the University of Arkansas passed the Senate 24-10 Tuesday. Although it was considerably weaker than what Pulaski County and a few other Central Arkansas legislators had wanted, the resolution (HCR 2) provoked a heated debate. Northeast Arkansas legislators provided the key votes. Senator Fred. H. Stafford of Marked Tree, who led the fight for university status for Arkansas State College at Jonesboro for years, appealed to his colleagues not to leave Pulaski legislators alone on the measure. He observed that they supported the 1967 act making Arkansas State a university.

• The Sherwood Civil Service Commission voted 4-0 Saturday to uphold the firing of two veteran police officers, James F. Williams and Cheryl Williams, who were alleged to have used their official positions to aid their daughter in a 1992 dispute with her landlord. Sherwood Police Chief James Crockett told the commission he fired the Williamses Dec. 3 1992, after an internal investigation revealed that the pair, who are married, had each violated six key department regulations. The daylong hearing concerned allegations that the Williamses used their positions to try to regain property of their daughter, Elizabeth "Christy" Williams, from her landlords, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Moore.

• Soon, children will crawl through tunnels and splash in water fountains when renovations to Little Rock's Riverfront Park take their final shape by Memorial Day weekend. The newly added Peabody Park within Riverfront Park will feature a pavilion designed to mimic a stone-covered bluff. Children will be able to crawl through concrete tunnels buried within the slope. And a fountain and waterfall will give visitors a chance to cool off and play in dancing sprays of water. "A park has to be a place where you can skin your knee, use your imagination," At-large City Director Dean Kumpuris said Wednesday.
