Arkansas couple rescued from flooded home, official says

An elderly couple was rescued from their lakeside Arkansas home early Friday after waters rose and left them stranded.

Emergency services were called about 4:30 a.m. to the residence, which is on Lake Barnett near Arkansas 31 and Gravel Hill Road, according to Tamara Jenkins, director of the White County Office of Emergency Management.

The residents are unhurt and staying with family, Jenkins said, though their home sustained extensive water damage.

This is the county's only home rescue so far, she added. Multiple vehicle rescues have been made, and about 65 roads in the county impassable due to high water, according to Jenkins. She said she doesn't expect waters to go down with more rain in the forecast.

White County is one of four counties in the state to ask the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management for assistance due to the flooding, agency spokesman Dan Noble said. The others are Clark County, Chicot County and Randolph County.
