Celebration set of LR record label

A live music event is planned for this week to celebrate the history of Little Rock's True Soul Records.

A panel discussion will accompany the performance at 7 p.m. Friday at the Ron Robinson Theater, 100 River Market Ave.

Lee Anthony started True Soul Records in 1968, according to a news release about the event, which describes him as a pioneer of Little Rock soul music.

Anthony opened the first black-owned record store in Arkansas in 1966 called Soul Brothers. The store is said to have anchored Little Rock's soul and funk scene at the time.

True Soul Records operated from 1968 to the mid-1980s.

Talk is scheduled on refugee center

The University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service is offering people a chance to learn more about a home for refugees in Northwest Arkansas this week.

The school plans a noon discussion Tuesday at Sturgis Hall, 1200 President Clinton Ave., about Canopy Northwest Arkansas, a group that works to support refugees who have resettled to that area.

The resettlement center provides housing, assistance with school enrollment, language classes, and access to doctors, lawyers, counselors and baby sitters.

"Canopy will help refugees learn English, put together a resume, evaluate their degree, and prepare for the American workforce," according to a news release.

The event is free and open to the public, but people are asked to reserve a seat by emailing publicprograms@clintonschool.uasys.edu or by calling (501) 683-5239.

All events also are streamed live on the school's website, clintonschool.uasys.edu.
