FAYETTEVILLE -- A multiple-vehicle wreck on Interstate 49 sent six people to the hospital this afternoon, according to Central EMS.

The accident happened shortly before 4 p.m. in the northbound lanes near exit 69 in Johnson. It involved nine people. Six were taken to Washington Regional Medical Center, CEMS Chief Becky Stewart said.

The highway was partly blocked, said Liz Chapman, Arkansas State Police spokeswoman.

Troopers were on the scene at 4:30 p.m. Chapman said she could not comment on details of the wreck until "troopers get the highway cleared and people are safe."

The Arkansas State Police said the road was clear as of Friday at 5 p.m.
