Brain expert to lecture at UAMS hall

A neuroscientist and neurosurgeon who is widely known in his field will give a lecture at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences on March 6.

Dr. Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa's lecture, scheduled for noon, will be held in the I. Dodd Wilson Education Building auditorium. He is making an appearance at UAMS as the keynote speaker for the Robert E. McGehee Jr. Distinguished Lectureship in Biomedical Research. Admission is free and open to the public.

Quinones is the William J. and Charles H. Mayo Professor and Chair of Neurologic Surgery in the Brain Tumor Stem Cell Research Laboratory at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla. Before that, he was a neuroscientist and neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

His work is focused on finding a cure for brain cancer.

Quinones will speak on "Becoming Dr. Q: An American Dream Like No Other/Making the Case for Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math." UAMS said in a news release that he came to the United States as "an undocumented immigrant" from Mexico in 1987, at age 19. A 2011 book, Becoming Dr. Q: My Journey from Migrant Farm Worker to Brain Surgeon, is under development as a movie by Disney and actor Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B Entertainment.
