Common-sense gun control

By RICHARD MASON

This article was published February 25, 2018 at 1:52 a.m.

I was 8 years old when I received my first gun, a Mossberg 20-gauge bolt action shotgun with a three-shot clip, and four years later a Browning Sweet 16. Along the way I acquired a .22 rifle and a .22 pistol. When I headed to the university I took all of them with me, and when I checked into Razorback Hall, carrying my guns with a pistol tucked in my belt, a faculty member opened the dorm door for me.

"I am proposing we eliminate the ownership of weapons specifically designed to kill humans. Those weapons belong in the military, not in the hands of a mentally ill shooter. And don’t give me the old guns-don’t-kill-people, people-kill-people crap, because that’s the biggest lie in the Second Amendment argument."

Is that the reason I lock-up my firearms when I leave my house?

DDDK, yep because PEOPLE with GUNS kill PEOPLE. Simple fact - the 1994 AWB significantly reduced gun deaths from mass shootings during the ten years it was in effect. When it was lifted, gun deaths from mass shootings rose significantly and have been rising ever since. The last 6 mass shootings were committed using AR-15 style weapons killing 175 not counting the shooter. In nations where an AWB is in place, mass shootings are almost non-existent.

Hear, hear! Love the money line:
“Now, a few words to our congressmen and senators: If you can vote against removing military weapons from the hands of the terrorists who kill children, then you have sold your soul to the NRA, have the spine of a jellyfish, and have the blood of hundreds of innocent victims on your hands.”

Those nations have no Constitution, or do they? PEOPLE with a desire to kill PEOPLE, will find a way to kill people. How's that gun control thing working out in Chicago (Chiraq)? More teens are killed in auto accident than with guns. More people are killed with hand guns than long guns.

Do you own a car? Have you ever been over the speed limit?

LOL. You show even more how issue illiterate you are. Yes, Germany has a Constitution. Yes, Israel has a Constitution. Yes, Australia has a Constitution. Yes, Japan has a Constitution. Those nations ban assault weapons and have seen dramatic decreases in mass shootings. Chicago no longer has a ban (yet another miss by the issue illiterate).

Do us all a favor and research the FACTS before posting any more lies. It’s pretty evident you don’t have the facts straight and are just hacking away with lies from the right wing sites.

Good column. Sensible. Factual. Great counterpoint to Masterson's drivel.

One of the main problems we have with the trump demographic is the lack of clear and concise reasoning. It's more emotion with this cadre. I feel, therefore... .Because of this reliance on emotion, usually knee-jerk, things are always black and white. If someone espouses the stand that assault weapons should be banned, they veer recklessly to the attack notion that that person "wants to take your guns away." The world is black and white to them in an emotional way, with very few shades of gray. That is why when we try to appeal to reason, they react irrationally, with no clear factual rebuttals.

Masterson’s article is a steaming pile of the same hog shlt against which he rails in his more logical moments.
