Jonesboro rides duo to OT victory

WEST MEMPHIS -- Senior guards Desi Sills and Tony Hutson combined for 55 points as Jonesboro held off West Memphis 70-65 in overtime in the 6A-East Conference tournament title game.

West Memphis (26-3) saw its winning streak halted at 18. The Blue Devils won both regular-season games the two teams played, but the Hurricane combo was just too tough.

West Memphis had a good look at the basket at the buzzer, but Sidney Stinson's three-pointer bounced off the rim.

"In a game like this, one possession, the ball's going to bounce a certain way," Jonesboro Coach Wes Swift. "And the ball bounced our way a couple of times."

With West Memphis up 60-59 with 16.6 seconds left in regulation, Sills missed the back end of a two-shot foul and the Blue Devils' Curtis Washington rebounded. Sills, however, stole the ball and put in a layup to give Jonesboro a 61-60 lead.

Regulation ended at 62-62.

Three Blue Devils' starters fouled out, including point guard Cavin Paige, swingman Zach Byrd and guard C.J. Prackett.

Sills made two free throws with 19.3 seconds left in overtime to make it 70-67. Kelsey Hubbard air-balled a three-pointer on the ensuing trip down the floor, but Stinson stole the rebound away from Jonesboro and missed the final three-point attempt.

Sills led all scorers with 30 points while Hutson tallied 25.

West Memphis' Chris Moore led his club with 23 points while Washington scored 15.
