A brief period of freezing rain is possible in parts of Arkansas over the weekend, though it's not expected to produce significant travel effects, forecasters said.

On Sunday morning, temperatures will cool enough for freezing rain to develop across northern and north-central portions of the state, according to the National Weather Service in North Little Rock.

Temperatures will start out in the upper 20s to lower 30s for central and northern Arkansas. Warming will continue throughout the day Sunday, with temperatures expected to climb above freezing that afternoon across much of the state.

The window of freezing rain will most likely affect areas north of Interstate 40 east of Clarksville and west of U.S. 67/167, meteorologists said.

Other areas will be either too warm or too dry for such wintry precipitation, according to the latest forecast.

“At worst, it appears that a light glaze of ice [up to a hundredth of an inch] may develop on elevated surfaces,” the outlook states. Still, road effects are expected to be minimal, “if there are any at all.”

Chances for cold rain — not in frozen form — are expected to increase significantly Sunday afternoon across Arkansas. Temperatures statewide will reach the upper 30s to lower 40s by the end of that day.
