Police: Teen with gun fatally shot by authorities in North Little Rock

A 17-year-old who opened fire during a struggle was fatally shot by authorities in North Little Rock early Sunday, police said.

It happened shortly after 1 a.m. after police pulled over a vehicle near 52nd Street and Camp Robinson Road, the North Little Rock Police Department said in a news release.

During a pat-down search of a 17-year-old occupant of the vehicle, an officer spotted a gun, police said. A struggle reportedly then occurred.

"During the struggle the suspect fired at least one shot at the officers which resulted in the officers firing shots at the suspect," police wrote, noting the teen died at the scene.

The teen was identified Sunday night as Charles Smith. Two other people were also reportedly in the vehicle.

The officers, who also have not been identified publicly, have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting. The release did not indicate any of the officers were hurt.
