Former Texas A&M running back Rakeem Boyd now has a chance to return to the SEC after receiving a scholarship offer from Arkansas.

Boyd, 6-0, 207 pounds, signed with the Aggies in 2016 and left College Station last year as a redshirt freshman. He enrolled at Independence Community College in Kansas, where he rushed 192 times for 1,211 yards and 14 touchdowns this past season.

He spoke with Arkansas Coach Chad Morris, Joe Craddock and Jeff Traylor on Sunday and learned of the offer.

“He really liked me,” said Boyd of Morris. “He’s always liked me at SMU.”

Boyd turned his detour to junior college from a negative into a positive and is glad to have the opportunity to return to major college football.

“It was kind of rough, you know, in the summer when I found out about the situation and knew I was going to have to go JUCO,” Boyd said. "During the summer, I kept working and working and working. I just knew who I was; I just had to show them so I just kept working. Right now, it’s kind of paying off.”

He’s also received an offer from Colorado and is talking to others after recently putting out his highlights from this season.

“I’m just talking to other schools right now. Small talk though,” he said.

Boyd attended Houston (Texas) Stratford High School and was rated a 4-star prospect by ESPN. He plans to make his first official visit to Arkansas during the Jan. 19-21 weekend and is unsure on other plans.

“I kind of see myself in the SEC or Big 12,” Boyd said. “I’m not really sure.”

Making a commitment to the Hogs during the visit seems unlikely.

“I’m not too sure I’ll be pulling the trigger anytime soon,” Boyd said.
