2 children beaten by group at North Little Rock park, police say; 1 attacker appeared to be armed

Two children were attacked Saturday afternoon by a group of minors at a North Little Rock park, their mother told police.

Officers responded around 1:50 p.m. in reference to a disturbance, according to a North Little Rock Police Department report.

A 35-year-old woman told authorities that her two sons — ages 10 and 13 — were playing at Heritage Park near 24th and Franklin streets while her husband worked on a house nearby.

She said she was standing in the home's yard when she heard her two sons yelling for help. The mother looked up to find six to eight people fighting her children and attempting to take their bikes, according to authorities.

She then ran toward them, and a short time later realized that one of them was involved in another disturbance last year related to her boys in which cellphones were stolen, police said.

The group, which traveled south from the park, appeared to gather more people before fleeing when the husband and other workers exited the nearby residence, the report stated.

One of the children told officers that he was working on his brother's bicycle when the group approached, asking about its cost. When he replied that it wasn't for sale, one youth pushed him to the ground, and all the attackers began hitting and kicking him, the report states.

His brother told police that the minors started "hitting him in the face" when he tried to help his sibling.

The victims said at least one attacker had what appeared to be a gun.

No suspects were named, and no arrests had been made at the time of the report.
