Ware speaks at MLK Day

In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, John Brown University will host the Rev. Lawrence Ware, assistant professor and diversity coordinator in the department of philosophy at Oklahoma State University, who will speak at 10 a.m. Monday in the Cathedral of the Ozarks and at 6:30 p.m. in Simmons Great Hall.

During the evening dinner, Rod Reed, university chaplain, will interview Ware about his involvement in racial reconciliation work in the church. Ware, a co-director of the Africana Studies Program at OSU, teaches and lectures across the country on issues ranging from race to economic policy. Ware is a contributing writer to The New York Times, Slate Magazine and The Root and has been a commentator on race and politics for TV One, the Huffington Post Live and NPR.

Both events are open to the public. Dinner guests are welcome to purchase a meal in the JBU cafeteria.

Woodcarving

on exhibit

The Bella Vista Woodcarvers Club will display pieces in a variety of arts and crafts mediums using wood as a basis for their work until Feb. 29 at the Bella Vista Historical Museum, 1885 Bella Vista Way. The museum hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, and admission to the museum is free.

Orchestra

rehearses

The Northwest Arkansas Community College Chamber String Orchestra will begin rehearsals for the spring semester at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in Burns Hall 2105 in Bentonville.

The ensemble is composed of students and community residents. Credit is available for those who wish to enroll. A limited number of scholarships are available to both music majors and nonmajors.

No audition is necessary.

Join the Alzheimer's Association at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Siloam Springs Regional Hospital for the Living with Alzheimer's Younger-Onset program to get answers to the questions that arise for people concerned about younger-onset Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia. The program is free.

Apple offers

writing classes

Linda Apple, author of INSPIRE! Writing from the Soul, will teach two half-day workshops Saturday on inspirational and devotional writing for the Village Writing School. The morning session, from 9 a.m. to noon, will focus on finding meaning in life experiences and is for followers of any worldview. The afternoon session, from 1 to 4 p.m., is focused on Christian devotional writing.

The workshops will be held at the Center for Nonprofits, 1200 W. Walnut St. in Rogers. Participants may take one or both of the sessions for $25 each.

Apple has had 16 stories published in the popular book series Chicken Soup for the Soul and is a motivational speaker and regional speaker trainer for Stonecroft Ministries. She has two books, Writing Life -- Your Stories Matter and Writing From Your Soul. She has taught workshops across the United States and in the United Kingdom.

The Village Writing School is a 501(c)3 nonprofit whose mission is to help local writers improve their craft and to foster a vibrant literary community in Northwest Arkansas.

MLK program

to be offered

The 15th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day presentation at Northwest Arkansas Community College will feature Pearl Dowe, associate professor and chairwoman of the department of political science at the University of Arkansas.

Dowe's presentation will be at noon Jan. 25 in Room 108 of the Becky Paneitz Student Center. It will be titled "The Revolution Was Televised: The Transformational Leadership of LBJ and MLK" and will examine the transformative way in which President Lyndon B. Johnson slowly rebranded the Democratic Party and consequently changed the dynamic of the relationship of the state and its citizens, while Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s moral leadership often overshadows his radical understanding of the role of government and democracy in ensuring equality.

The presentation is free and open to the public. The event is co-sponsored by the department of social sciences, the Honors Program and the Student Ambassador and Government Association at NWACC.

Line dance

class set

A beginners line dance class will meet from 12:45 to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays at Riordan Hall in Bella Vista. Registration fee for this class is $20. There is also a $30 annual fee payable to Riordan Hall. Those who do not have a Bella Vista photo ID will pay Riordan Hall $2.50 per class.

The class will be taught by Kristine Schaap, who has taught the beginners class for several years. New dancers will have the opportunity to learn line-dancing steps and dances that use these steps. They will also receive handouts, lots of practice and personal attention. Line dancing is an enjoyable way to get great exercise.

Pageant offers

youth program

Registration is now open for local girls and boys who want to participate in the Princess/Prince program during the Miss UAFS Scholarship Pageant Feb. 24, offering an opportunity to meet and appear on stage with pageant contestants.

The registration fee is $100, and the deadline is Jan. 24. Participants in the program will participate in a tea party with an appearance by Miss UAFS and Miss Arkansas, an on-stage appearance during the pageant, a princess tiara or prince medallion, a T-Shirt and goody bag, and photos from the day's event.

The Miss UAFS Scholarship Pageant will be held at the ArcBest Corp. Performing Arts Center in the Fort Smith Convention Center, located at 55 S. Seventh St.

The Princess/Prince Program is not a competition, and ages 5-10 can participate.

Conversations

begin April 13

The Arkansas Agriculture Department's Arkansas Grown Program has announced a regional Local Conversations event April 13 at the Brightwater Center in Bentonville. The event helps create connections between local farmers and producers with the buying community, provide increased marketing opportunities for locally grown produce and products, and also highlight the health benefits of Arkansas specialty crops. Offerings will include networking, farm-to-school training and a vendor showcase. Online event registration is available.

Farm to School training will be hosted during the morning session, which will target Arkansas school cafeteria representatives and meal coordinators, as well as producers, farmers, and others with an interest in Farm to School efforts. The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Events are free, but space is limited. Attendees can choose to attend single or multiple sessions at each event.
