About 150 people exposed to measles in Little Rock, state Health Department says

About 150 people are believed to have been exposed to measles in Little Rock last week, according to the Arkansas Department of Health.

The exposure between Jan. 9 and Thursday includes passengers on United Airlines flight 5314 from Chicago to Little Rock on Jan. 10, an agency news release states.

Also reportedly exposed were people inside UAMS Medical Center’s emergency department from 4:30 p.m. Jan. 10 through 12:30 a.m. Jan. 11 as well as from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 11.

People who were on the Little Rock-bound flight or who were at UAMS during those times are advised to call their doctor before entering a clinic, even if the care is routine and considered unrelated to measles, according to the release.

The Heath Department says a person exposed to measles is unlikely to contract the illness if they had it in the past, if they were born before 1957 or if they have been vaccinated with the measles, mumps and rubella shot.

Symptoms of measles, considered a highly infectious virus, include a runny nose, high fever, red eyes, rash and cough.

The incubation period is typically eight to 12 days but can be as short as five days or as long as 21 days, the agency said.
