Arkansas Shorts! shows off 39 films that dazzled judges

HOT SPRINGS -- Arkansas Shorts! A Night of Short Film was held at the Malco Theater on Jan. 6.

The annual event, hosted by Low Key Arts, started with a reception in the lobby of the theater recently renovated by magician Maxwell Blade. Guests mingled with filmmakers and actors in attendance and posed for portraits by photographer Thomas Petillo.

A record number of almost 1,500 films was submitted to Arkansas Shorts. Thirty-nine shorts were selected and shown in three blocks. The first two blocks of film were international and North American. The final and largest block of films were made by Arkansas natives or residents and included films from Low Key Arts' all-ages film program, Inception to Projection.

Prizes were awarded to Arkansas filmmakers with the 2018 Best of Arkansas Shorts prize going to Jamie Sisley for the short Playing the Field. The 2018 Audience Choice Award was given to Rachael Asherman for the film Matriarchs.
