Carjacker jumps in vehicle after man left it running at gas pump, North Little Rock police say; owner hurt trying to get it back

A 67-year-old man was robbed of his car after leaving it running while he went inside a North Little Rock convenience store, police said.

An officer responded shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday to D&J Mini Mart at 1802 Main St. in reference to a robbery, according to a North Little Rock Police Department report.

The victim, found inside the convenience store, told police that he left his black Dodge Caliber running at a gas pump as he went into the business to buy a can of beer.

When he came back out, the man found a hooded carjacker inside the driver’s seat of his vehicle, the report states.

At that point, the car's owner went to the passenger side and began to beat on the window before walking to the driver’s side to try to to open the door, according to authorities.

The victim was thrown to the ground as the carjacker drove off and traveled north on Main Street and then east on East 19th Street.

Police noted that the 67-year-old suffered lacerations to his right leg and his right arm. He was transported to Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock for treatment.

The stolen vehicle was found later Saturday at 1909 Arkansas 161 in North Little Rock, police said.

Authorities named two possible suspects in the carjacking. Their names did not appear in online records for the Pulaski County jail as of Tuesday morning.
