Attorney General Leslie Rutledge announced Wednesday she will mount an investigation into the manufacturers of prescription opioids as part of Arkansas’ effort to combat a nationwide opioid epidemic.

The investigation could last from several months to several years, Rutledge said, and could result in lawsuits if the probe finds evidence of wrongdoing by the drug makers.

To assist her office in the investigation, the attorney general has contracted with several firms, including Little Rock’s Dover, Dixon and Horn. Rutledge said she will maintain control over any potential litigation.

Other states, including Ohio, Louisiana and Mississippi, have undertaken similar investigations.

The Arkansas Association of Counties recently filed a federal lawsuit against some drug companies, though that litigation will remain separate from Rutledge’s suit, she said.
