Police: Man dies after found shot at North Little Rock home; killing is city's 4th homicide of year

A 33-year-old man has died after being found shot early Friday at a North Little Rock residence, authorities said.

Officers responded around 2:50 a.m. to a home in the 4100 block of Pike Avenue in reference to an individual who had been shot, according to a news release.

Inside the residence, North Little Rock police found Zechariah Jones lying on the floor and suffering from “several” gunshot wounds, the release said.

Jones was taken to UAMS Medical Center in Little Rock, where he was pronounced dead.

As of around 9 a.m., police were interviewing witnesses, the release states. An investigation is ongoing, and there was no word on any suspects or arrests.

Jones’ killing was the fourth homicide recorded in North Little Rock so far this year, compared with nine in all of last year, police said. Twelve people were slain in 2016, according to police data.

The year-to-date 2018 figure includes an officer-involved shooting in which a 17-year-old was killed during a traffic stop.

Sgt. Brian Dedrick, a Police Department spokesman, said that while the number is "high" for January, it does not represent a trend.

"When you look at the circumstances behind these homicides, it's very difficult to prevent everything," Dedrick said, noting that two of four killings this year happened inside homes.
