Virginia ends long drought

NO. 2 VIRGINIA 65, NO. 4 DUKE 63

DURHAM, N.C. -- Kyle Guy scored 17 points and hit two free throws with 6.1 seconds left, and No. 2 Virginia beat No. 4 Duke 65-63 on Saturday.

It was Virginia's first victory at Duke in 23 years.

Ty Jerome had 13 points and a critical three-pointer with 37.6 seconds to play, and Devon Hall finished with 14 points to help the Cavaliers (20-1, 9-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) win their 12th consecutive and their first at Cameron Indoor Stadium since 1995.

The nation's stingiest defense held the top offense in Division I to more than 28 points below its average of 91.7 points.

Marvin Bagley III had 30 points and 14 rebounds, while Wendell Carter Jr. had 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Blue Devils (18-3, 6-3).

Jerome's three with the shot clock winding down put Virginia up 63-58. Both he and Guy made things tense by missing the front ends of one-and-ones in the final minute.

Bagley swished a deep three with 7.4 seconds remaining before Duke fouled Guy again, and this time he hit both attempts to make it 65-61 and effectively seal it. Bagley added a layup at the buzzer.

NO. 9 CINCINNATI 62, MEMPHIS 48

MEMPHIS -- Gary Clark had 18 points and 9 rebounds, Jacob Evans added 14 points -- including a pair of three-pointers to break Cincinnati out of a second-half shooting slump -- as the No. 9 Bearcats defeated Memphis for their 12th consecutive victory.

The Bearcats (19-2, 8-0 American Athletic Conference) used a stingy defense to hold Memphis to 31.1 percent shooting for the game, including converting only 3 of 17 shots from outside the arc.

Jeremiah Martin led the Tigers (13-8, 4-4) with 20 points, while Kareem Brewton Jr. finished with 10 for Memphis.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE 95,

NO. 10 NORTH CAROLINA 91, OT

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Allerik Freeman scored a career-high 29 points and hit seven of North Carolina State's 15 three-pointers to upset No. 10 North Carolina in overtime.

Omer Yurtseven added 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Wolfpack (15-7, 5-4 Atlantic Coast Conference). That included a huge putback with 30.9 seconds left in the overtime and his team up a point. Markell Johnson sealed the victory with two free throws with 3.0 seconds left, capping his own big day with 20 points and 11 assists.

Luke Maye had 31 points and 12 rebounds for North Carolina (16-6, 5-4), while Theo Pinson had career highs of 22 points and 15 rebounds.

NO. 11 ARIZONA 74, UTAH 73

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Dusan Ristic scored 23 points and made all three of his three-point attempts, including a key one in the final two minutes, helping No. 11 Arizona hold off Utah.

Arizona (18-4, 8-1 Pac-12) had a four-point lead after Ristic hit two free throws, but Utah's Justin Bibbins hit a three-pointer with 4.3 seconds to pull Utah (12-9, 4-5) within one. Arizona's Allonzo Trier was called for an offensive foul before the ball was inbounded and Utah got the ball inside to Donnie Tillman, who was unable to hit a contested shot. Arizona's Keanu Pinder missed a free throw with 0.3 seconds left and David Collette was well short on a desperation shot from the opposite free throw line.

Sedrick Barefield led the Utes back, scoring 26 points.

NO. 21 ARIZONA STATE 80, COLORADO 66

TEMPE, Ariz. — Tra Holder and Shannon Evans each sank four three-pointers in the second half as No. 21 Arizona State (16-5, 4-5 Pac-12) pulled away to beat Colorado. Dominique Collier scored 11 points for the Buffaloes (12-10, 4-6).

NO. 24 RHODE ISLAND 61, DUQUESNE 58

KINGSTON, R.I. -- Stanford Robinson hit a three-point shot as time expired to lift No. 24 Rhode Island to a victory over Duquesne.

The victory extended Rhode Island's winning streak to 12 games overall and 17 against Atlantic 10 opponents.

The Dukes (14-8, 5-4) led by as many as 15 points in the first half before the Rams (17-3, 9-0) gradually chipped away at the deficit behind the play of E.C. Matthews, who led Rhode Island with 20 points.
