Black female lawyers lauded by legal society

The W. Harold Flowers Law Society Inc. recognized a slate of black Arkansas women dubbed "legal pioneers and living legends" during the society's annual banquet, held June 22 at the Sherman E. Tate Student Recreation Center, Philander Smith College in Little Rock.

Honorees, most of whom were in attendance, were retired Circuit Judge Kathleen Bell; lawyers Arkie Byrd, Sheila Campbell and Marva Davis; law librarian Kathryn Fitzhugh; state Sen. Stephanie Flowers, D-Pine Bluff; Circuit Judge Alice Sprinkle Gray; retired law professor Sarah Howard Jenkins; lawyers Beverly Hood Jones and Agather McKeel; Circuit Judge Joyce Williams Warren; and lawyer Vashti Varnado.

Lawyer Tjuana Byrd was master of ceremonies for a dinner program that included a welcome from Carmen Parks, representing Philander President Roderick Smothers; tributes from District Judge Mark Leverett and lawyer Danyelle Walker; and a keynote address by the Rev. Phoebe Roaf, rector of St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Richmond, Va., and daughter of the late Judge Andree Layton Roaf of Pine Bluff. Honorees were presented awards by retired Judges Olly Neal and Marion Humphrey, and lawyers Eugene Hunt and Richard Mays.

Remarks from Justice Brooks, society president, finished out the evening.
