UA Honors College adds 88 students

Eighty-eight incoming freshmen have been selected as Honors College fellows at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.

Of that number, 79 are Arkansans.

Together, the incoming students had a grade-point average of 4.19 and an average composite ACT college-entrance exam score of 33.83.

UA established its Honors College in 2002, made possible by using part of the Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation's $300 million gift to the university that year.

The Honors College awards fellowships for up to 90 freshmen each year. The fellowships provide $70,000 per student over four years. The program also awards more than $1 million in undergraduate research and study abroad grants each year. The fellowship includes the costs of tuition and fees, books, and room and board, giving Honors College students financial freedom to pursue original research and study abroad. The fellowship funds can be combined with other scholarships and grants.

To be eligible to apply, students must score at least a 32 on the ACT and have a minimum 3.8 grade-point average in high school. Honors College administrators and faculty review each student's application, looking for evidence of intellectual curiosity, leadership potential and community involvement. The selection process includes a writing test and a campus interview for finalists in early March.
