Neighborhood where I live: Midtown neighborhood of Little Rock

Occupation: Retired teacher and principal (Holy Souls School)

My favorite space: Our backyard

Why? Our yard is peaceful and beautiful, filled with flowers and plants of many varieties. We have a bird-feeding station, and we so enjoy watching all kinds of birds, including cardinals, orioles, finches, mockingbirds and many others. One mockingbird will fly at and peck at the window to let us know when his favorite feeder needs a refill.

Our yard's beauty is a family effort. Our six children, 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandkids all enjoy helping. As I tend the garden, I think about how it is much like teaching children, which I did for more than 40 years. A teacher tries to help every child reach full potential and, like different flowers, each child has unique needs. Just as tending a flower garden's needs rewards one with beauty and peace, so does teaching a child and seeing the child grow and flourish through life.

I thank God for flowers, birds, family and all my students and friends who have blessed me over my 87 years. I have received so much more than I have been able to give and am also blessed with these bonus days in good health and faculties, with so many wonderful people who have been part of my life.

If I could change one thing to improve this space, I would: Nothing -- everything is lovely.
