Driver, 2 passengers killed in overnight crash in Arkansas, state police say

Three people were killed in a crash early Sunday in northeast Arkansas, state police said.

The single-vehicle wreck happened shortly after 1:10 a.m. as 58-year-old Charles Massey was driving a Chevrolet Cruze north on Arkansas 77 in Marion, according to a preliminary report.

Police say the car left the highway in Crittenden County and “made contact with a sign” before striking a tree.

Massey, a Marion resident, died as a result of the crash, the report states. Also killed were passengers Ray Smith, 59, of West Memphis and Calvin Beaugard, 63, of Sunset.

The weather was described as clear and roads were said to be dry at the time of the overnight crash.

At least 244 deaths have been recorded in wrecks on Arkansas roads this year, according to preliminary figures.
