Arkansas man driving wrong way on I-40 dies in crash, state police say

A 69-year-old Arkansas man driving the wrong way on Interstate 40 was killed in a crash Monday morning, authorities said.

The wreck occurred shortly after 6:15 a.m. near the Crittenden County community of LeHi.

Charley Warren of Hughes was traveling east in the interstate's westbound lanes when his Chevrolet Impala hit a cable barrier and then a concrete barrier, a preliminary report states. The car then traveled off the road and ended up in a ditch.

Authorities did not specify why Warren was driving the wrong way. He suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

The report states the weather was clear and the road was dry at the time of the wreck.

At least 247 people have died in wrecks on state roads this year, according to preliminary state police data.
