Authorities are investigating after a body was found along a rural Arkansas road Wednesday.

A driver traveling along Gibb Anderson Road in Jefferson County just after 10 a.m. Wednesday spotted the body, which was lying close to the asphalt street, sheriff's office spokesman Maj. Lafayette Woods Jr. said.

Woods said the female was clothed, but there was no identification on the body. According to the spokesman, the state of decomposition precludes the sheriff's office from releasing any kind of identifying details before an autopsy.

“That road is not heavily traveled,” Woods said. “It’s a rural, agricultural area. Mostly just farmers and farmhands on it. [The body] had been there for at least a day and a half, two days. That’s not unusual.”

Woods said forensic analysis would help determine the circumstances of the death and help identify the body. The Arkansas medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy Thursday, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.
