Arkansan killed after car runs red light, hits vehicle in intersection, state police say

An 85-year-old Arkansas man died Thursday after the vehicle he was riding in ran a red light and struck a car, authorities said.

The wreck occurred shortly after 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Johnson Avenue and Pleasant Grove Road in Jonesboro.

According to a preliminary report, 80-year-old Patsy Cate of Walnut Ridge was driving a 2009 Lincoln MKZ east on Johnson when she drove through a red light, hitting a 2017 Nissan Sentra that was headed south on Pleasant Grove.

A passenger in the Lincoln — 85-year-old Carl J. Cate of Walnut Ridge — suffered fatal injuries in the wreck. Listed as injured were Patsy Cate and a youth who was driving the Nissan.

State police said the weather was clear and the road was dry at the time of the Craighead County crash.

At least 250 people have died in wrecks on Arkansas this year, according to preliminary data.
