BENTON -- The slings and arrows that were expected to fly here Friday in connection with a hearing on the subject of the Benton Dam didn't materialize, but more than two dozen interested persons voiced their views about the proposed $60 million structure that may be built just off Interstate Route 30 north-northwest of the Saline County seat. The pro-dam forces argued that the dam was needed to control floods on the Saline, supply water for Benton, the Little Rock metropolitan area and cities down stream and to afford much needed recreation facilities for rapidly growing Central Arkansas.

• A witness sitting in the wrong place at the wrong time in a courtroom led the Arkansas Supreme Court on Monday to overturn the aggravated robbery and kidnapping convictions of a Union County man. The ruling means a new trial for Leon Mask, who was sentenced to a total of 120 years in prison after receiving maximum terms on two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of kidnapping. By a 5-2 vote, the high court agreed with Mask's argument on appeal that Circuit Judge John M. Graves of Camden erred in allowing a robbery victim to sit at the counsel table after testifying.

• An argument over wages between two roommates led to a Saturday morning slaying in a southwest Little Rock mobile home park, police said. But less than 12 hours after Jeffery Wade Southard, 34, of 11500 Chicot Road, Lot 68, was found lying dead in his bedroom, police had arrested the roommate on a capital-murder charge. A resident told police she saw that the door to Southard's mobile home was open about 8 a.m., and when she looked 45 minutes later, the door remained open, so she went inside. The woman said she found Southard's body on the bedroom floor.
