Overdose suspected in Arkansas lockup death

A 28-year-old woman being housed at the East Central Arkansas Community Correction Center in West Memphis died of a suspected drug overdose Thursday night, according to a spokesman.

The death came just hours after the woman, Melissa Maier, had arrived at the facility operated by Arkansas Community Correction, the state's parole and probation agency.

According to Dina Tyler, the agency's spokesman, Maier had been ordered to complete a 60-day drug treatment program at the facility. When Maier arrived, she tested positive for two illegal substances, Tyler said in an email.

According to court records, Maier was arrested last July and again in March in Stuttgart on drug charges.

The Arkansas State Police is investigating Maier's death, Tyler said.
