Little Rock animal shelter names new area in honor of cat that made TV station its home

The Little Rock Animal Village opened Joey's Play Room, a new area for cats awaiting adoption, on Saturday.

The space is named in honor of a feral cat that made the garden outside the KTHV-TV studio its home. The green-eyed tabby appeared on the CBS affiliate's morning show nearly every day until he died in 2014.

Construction on the room has been underway since at least April, though fundraising has been going on for years, according to social media updates from the shelter. The room will feature a $5,000 playground fashioned with a multiple-cat environment in mind.

"This is special equipment designed specifically for shelter environments," a post said. "It's engaging for the kitties but also easy to disinfect daily, which is important in a shelter. This equipment cost about $5,000 but it is a worthwhile investment in the health and welfare of the thousands of cats who will benefit from it."
