Driver dies after pickup travels off state highway, hits tree

A 50-year-old Arkansas man died earlier this month after the pickup he was driving traveled off a state highway and hit a tree, authorities said.

The crash happened just before 7 a.m. July 9 on Arkansas 16 in Cleburne County, according to a preliminary accident report from the Arkansas State Police.

Troopers said William Wingate of Fairfield Bay was driving east when he lost control of his 1998 Dodge Ram at a curve. The pickup crossed into the westbound lane, traveled off the road and hit a tree.

Conditions were described as clear and dry at the time of the wreck.

At least 253 people have died in accidents on Arkansas roads so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
