FAYETTEVILLE -- A pipe broke at a public housing complex early Monday, leaving residents without water and Housing Authority officials seeking assistance.

The pipe broke beneath a sidewalk near Teeny Tiny Preschool, which operates out of a former community building at the Willow Heights complex at 10 S. Willow Ave. Water service at the school and all the apartment buildings had to be shut off, according to Mike Emery, Housing Authority board chairman.

Crews at the scene about 5 p.m. Monday said it could take until today to fix the problem. They'll have to dig through the concrete sidewalk and the pipe is several feet underground. The break could be in a part of pipe that's 30-50 years old, said M.D. Atwell, maintenance supervisor for the authority.

Housing Authority officials bought water for residents, and Walmart on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard donated a pallet of bottled water, Emery said. Salvation Army and Red Cross were looking into what they can do to help residents.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has been notified, Emery said.

Anyone who would like to help is encouraged to call the Housing Authority at 521-3850.
