Hey, that was cool

That photo on page 2B of Arkansas' newspaper Tuesday jolted some readers out of their steamy-weather doldrums. It showed a figure-skating coach working to improve the skills of a 5-year-old on the ice at Skating Skills Camp at the Jones Center in Springdale. Both were wearing warm-up pants, parkas and gloves. And they looked like they needed 'em.

No doubt plenty of those who encountered this image slowed for a moment to sip their coffee and clear their heads before making a point of reading the cutline. They wanted to make sure there hadn't been a sudden blast of Arctic air moving across the region.

No such luck, but a thunderstorm over the weekend and a scattering of rainfall during the week made the atmosphere a bit more bearable. It encouraged reckless winter-themed behavior--we know a woman who cranked up a slow cooker to produce chicken stock, another who decided it was now or never if there was to be a pot of homemade chili served during the summer, and a third who put the top down on a Volkswagen convertible for a brief, breezy joyride around town.

Courage, fellow swelterers. Summer is about halfway over. And although September is hardly sweater weather, at least it signals that the end is in sight.
