June work caps busy 6 months at Little Rock port

June was the third busiest month ever recorded at the Port of Little Rock with the Arkansas River site working 70 barges and handling more than 106,000 tons of cargo.

Through the first six months of the year, barge activity and cargo tonnage has climbed 32 percent and 33 percent respectively, compared with the same period in 2017, according to port data.

For the first six months of the year, the port worked 267 barges, or 64 more than the 203 it worked during the same period in 2017.

It handled 408,000 tons of cargo in the first six months of 2018 compared with the 307,000 tons it handled in the first six months last year.

A total of 5,973,595 tons of cargo was transported on the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System through the first six months of 2018, a 6 percent increase over the 5,636,364 tons the system handled for the same period last year.
