Gunfire near UCA probed in Conway

CONWAY -- No one was wounded by gunfire near the University of Central Arkansas campus Wednesday, a police spokesman said.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m., UCA issued an emergency alert advising students of a "serious" incident and telling them to seek shelter. A short time later, UCA canceled the alert and said operations on the campus were back to normal.

Conway police spokesman LaTresha Woodruff said shots were fired at College Park Apartments. When officers got there, they found bullet casings, she said. "At this point there appears no one was hit," she said.

UCA police spokesman Michael Hopper said authorities first had thought the shooter might have fled to the campus but said that turned out not to be the case.

Woodruff said police were talking with witnesses about what happened. She said no one had been arrested as of early evening.
