Arkansas man walking along interstate dies after being struck by two vehicles; 1 left scene, police say

A 41-year-old Arkansas man who was walking along Interstate 530 early Friday was killed after he was hit by two vehicles, including one that left the scene, police said.

Michael W. Coates of Searcy was walking near White Hall in Jefferson County around 1:15 a.m. when he was hit by a southbound vehicle that then left the scene of the crash, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

Coates was then hit by a southbound 2013 Buick, police said. Coates sustained fatal injuries.

Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler said the agency's Criminal Investigation Division was trying to determine the make and model of the first vehicle.

Conditions were listed as clear and dry at the time of the crash.

Coates’ body was taken to the Jefferson County coroner’s office, according to the report.

There have been at least 260 deaths on state roads in 2018, according to preliminary figures from police.
