Gardeners

The Benton County Master Gardeners, in partnership with the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, will offer a training class to Benton County residents interested in becoming a Master Gardener.

Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in growing flowers, vegetables, fruits, shrubs, trees and lawns. What really sets them apart from other home gardeners is their commitment to learning and sharing what they learn with others.

Master Gardener trainees attend 40 hours of classes taught by University of Arkansas Extension staff and specialists in topics ranging from lawn care, flower and vegetables gardening, ornamental trees and shrubs, fruit crops and houseplants to insect, disease and weed control, soil science, plant nutrition and pesticide safety.

In exchange for training, participants are expected to volunteer 40 hours of service to their local extension program. Master Gardeners provide gardening instruction in public and school gardens, assist with community beautification projects, staff an educational booth at local farmers markets or county fair, and plan or assist with other local horticultural activities.

The next Master Gardener class in this area is scheduled on Wednesdays from Oct. 17 to Nov. 14 at the Benton County Cooperative Extension Office. Registration is $75, and class space is limited.
