Environment topic June 6

An Ozark Environmental Conversation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. June 6 at the Arvest Conference Center, North Main Street and Legion Lane in Bentonville.

Speakers include David Gould, director of the Plymouth Massachusetts Department of Marine and Environmental Affairs; Raven Lawson, watershed protection manager with Central Arkansas Water; and Kat Hoenke, spatial ecologist with the Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership.

Ozark Environmental Conversations are organized by The Friends of Little Sugar Creek and The Ozark Society Sugar Creek Chapter with support from Patagonia.

The public is welcome. A drawing will be held for a kayak, a guided fishing trip and Airship coffee.

Blood Center seeks donors

The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks strives for area blood reserves to be at around a three-day supply for all blood types. At this time the blood center has less than optimum reserves for all negative blood types. The public is urged to help by donating.

Backpacking to be taught

Hobbs State Park will be holding an Introduction to Backpacking Clinic to help the beginning backpacker get started. This hands-on, overnight trip is designed for people with little or no backpacking experience and is led by a park interpreter and experienced backpacker along the 8.5-mile long Pigeon Roost Trail. Topics covered during the clinic include packing, cooking, safety, leave no trace, and navigation.

Participants will need to bring their own food, water and equipment to camp overnight. Hikers should meet at 2 p.m. June 9 at the Pigeon Roost Trail Head, 6/10 mile east of the visitor center, and be prepared to stay through noon June 10. Participants must be 8 years old and older, and minors must be accompanied by an adult. The cost for the clinic is $10. No pets, alcohol or weapons will be allowed.

Hearing loss to be topic

The Senior Health Clinic at Washington Regional and Your Health Matters presentation series are offering a program titled "What'd You Say?" from 11 a.m. to noon June 11 at the Pat Walker Center for Seniors, 12 E. Appleby Road in Fayetteville. The presenter, audiologist Elizabeth Bowden, will discuss the hearing mechanism, abnormalities that occur and possible remediations, as well as emotional, social and cognitive effects of untreated hearing loss.

Artmaking for dementia

Artist Dylan Gebbia-Richards, whose work is on view at in the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art exhibition, The Beyond: Georgia O'Keeffe and Contemporary Art, will lead a hands-on art making activity for individuals in the early-stage of Alzheimer's disease or related dementia and their care partners. The workshop will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. June 19 at the Schmieding Center in Springdale. This unique program is free; however, registration is required as space is limited.
