UAMS names Long as dean of Health Professions College

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences has appointed a dean for its College of Health Professions.

UAMS chose Susan Long, the interim dean since Douglas L. Murphy retired from the position effective Dec. 31, 2017. Long, who has been teaching at UAMS since 1992, has been associate dean for academic affairs of the college since 2012.

In that job, she has been administrative leader of the College of Health Professions' academic affairs, including curriculum, new programs and faculty development, among other things.

The College of Health Professions offers programs that provide education, service and research in allied health professions.

Educational programs include audiology and speech pathology, dental-general practice residency, dental hygiene, dietetics and nutrition, emergency medical sciences, genetic counseling, health information management, imaging and radiation sciences, laboratory sciences, occupational therapy, ophthalmic technologies, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, and respiratory and surgical technologies.

Long, 53, will earn $240,000 a year.

She received a bachelor's degree from Ohio State University in Columbus, a master's degree from the University of North Florida, and a doctoral degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

At UAMS, she started as an assistant professor in the UAMS college's dental hygiene program, where she is now a professor. In addition to associate dean for academic affairs in the college, she has been associate director of clinical programs in the UAMS Center for Dental Education.
