HoneyTree’s Sugar Free Imitation Honey
HoneyTree’s Sugar Free Imitation Honey

WHAT: HoneyTree's Sugar Free Imitation Honey

STATS: One tablespoon contains 50 calories and zero fat, 17 carbohydrate (from sugar alcohols), zero sugar, zero fiber and zero protein grams. I bought it at the Walmart Supercenter, 700 Bowman Road in Little Rock. More information at honeytree.com.

THE SKINNY: What's in Imitation Honey? None of your beeswax. Well, no bee's beeswax anyway.

We imagine that this sugar-free product of HoneyTree -- producer of real honey, too -- was made entirely in a factory, except maybe for the "natural flavor" included on the label. It consists mostly of sugar alcohols (sorbitol, maltitol, higher polyols) and artificial sweetener (acesulfame potassium or Ace K).

Still, it's worth buzzing about for those on sugar-restricted diets. The sweet golden syrup does have the rich, sticky texture of honey, which is otherwise impossible to duplicate in dressings, marinades and sauces.

It's not natural, but to bee honest, it's not nasty either, Honey.

Slim Pickings is a weekly review of light foods.
