Part of Little Rock's Markham Street to be closed for more than 1 week

A section of Markham Street will be closed through June 24 to allow city staff members to complete a pedestrian safety study.

The portion of the roadway between Pine Street and Kavanaugh Boulevard is blocked off and marked with a sign reading “Road Diet” as part of an attempt to improve pedestrian safety and decrease speeding through the area.

The closure will change the four-lane section of Markham Street to three lanes with one westbound lane, a center turning lane and one eastbound lane.

The southernmost lane of Markham Street will be closed to allow for more pedestrian activities in front of the stores in the Stiff Station Business District.

“These changes will be temporary and will be testing an idea to improve pedestrian safety along this section of Markham,” a news release said.

The new layout of the roadway began Monday.
