UA gift to create scholarship

FAYETTEVILLE -- A $50,000 gift from a Missouri couple will create a scholarship for University of Arkansas, Fayetteville students.

The Guy Eastman Brown II and Ellen Tarshis Brown Advance Arkansas Endowed Scholarship will give preference to students from Arkansas who are military veterans, as well as to students on active duty or who are serving as reservists or in the National Guard, according to UA.

The Browns live in Columbia, Mo., and both served in the Air Force, according to UA. Guy Brown grew up in Houston and Fayetteville, and he earned a business degree in 1962 from UA.

Existing UA scholarships for veterans or current U.S. armed forces service members include approximately 25 one-year scholarships of up to $4,000 each, according to UA's website.

In 2017-18, UA's Veterans Resource and Information Center assisted 1,507 students with military backgrounds, a total that includes dependents of veterans, Erika Gamboa, the center's director, said in an email.
