• The Arkansas State Music Teachers' Association has the record of having more first-year examinations among members for the licentiate grade than any other association, the number being 29; and the Examining Board of the Arkansas association is the first board that, before making any examinations, was passed by the National Board, consisting of musicians of nation-wide reputation, Mrs. C. E. Whitney said yesterday. The meeting of the association closed yesterday with election of officers and a trip to Camp Pike.

HOT SPRINGS -- A Garland County Circuit Court jury found Frank Davis, 44, of Hot Springs, guilty of first-degree murder Friday, a verdict that can carry the death penalty. This is one of the first verdicts, which carries a possible death penalty, to be assessed in the nation since a United States Supreme Court ruling on the punishment last week. Circuit Judge Henry M. Britt of Hot Springs set formal sentencing for 9 a.m. Monday. Davis' attorney, Jack Holt of Little Rock, said he would appeal the decision.

June 15, 1993

• The first degree murder conviction of a man who killed his infant son, placed the child in an ice chest and covered the body with cement was upheld Monday by the state Supreme Court. Tommy D. Smith of Marked Tree was convicted Oct. 5, 1992, in Poinsett County Circuit Court of murdering his 5-month-old son, Deante, on Dec. 13, 1991. Smith was sentenced to 40 years in prison. Smith, who was 19 when his son died, contended there was insufficient evidence to support the conviction.

• A high-profile high school basketball player's death in Little Rock earlier this year sparked a push by some legislators and athletic trainers to improve safety at high school sporting events. Parkview High School basketball player Antony Hobbs collapsed and died during a Jan. 2 game. Medical examiners later determined that he suffered from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy -- essentially an enlarged heart. Medical experts say the condition is a leading cause of death among otherwise healthy young athletes.
