Man stabbed near camp on UA land

FAYETTEVILLE -- A homeless man was rushed Saturday to Washington Regional Medical Center after University of Arkansas police responded to a report of a stabbing on undeveloped land owned by the university.

University police at about 1:30 p.m. found the man in near West 19th Street with a deep cut to his midsection, according to a report.

Several homeless encampments dot the south Fayetteville area, more than a mile from the main university campus. The victim was able to speak with police after surgery, but no update on his condition was available Monday, said Capt. Gary Crain.

Gina Maddox, spokeswoman for the medical center, said the man wasn't listed as a patient at the hospital Monday.

At the scene Saturday, UA police took a 31-year-old man into custody on unrelated warrants for failure to appear and failure to pay fines, Crain said.

The man was at one time also being held on suspicion of first-degree battery, but Crain said in a text message Monday evening the charge was expected to be dropped.

"We received conflicting information. The case is under investigation," Crain said.

Crain said both men were living in homeless encampments in the area, the same general location where a 51-year-old man, George Irving Morrison, was found badly injured last month. Morrison was pronounced dead May 3 at the medical center the same day he was found unresponsive by police.

A 23-year-old homeless man, Quinton Lamar Taylor, was arrested by UA police May 25 and is being held on suspicion of second-degree murder in that case.
