• Joseph Ruhlin, 41, the former treasurer of a firefighters union local in Akron, Ohio, convicted of stealing union funds to pay for personal items such as a pool and tickets to sporting events, was sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay $385,000 in restitution.
• James Keller, the Adams County, Ill., coroner criticized for keeping poor people's remains until their relatives could pay $1,000, will resign effective July 10, saying he wants to spend more time with his family.
• Will Ketcher, a 4-year-old who sent a letter to the Rhode Island State Police seeking help finding his stuffed cheetah, Roger, after the toy fell out a window onto Interstate 95, got a package from troopers explaining that they saw no sign of Roger but did find another stuffed cheetah that wanted to live with him in New York.
• Carlos Novicky, 18, of Torrington, Conn., investigating a noise in his kitchen, came face-to-face with a bear that had pushed through a screen window to snatch a loaf of bread on the counter and that was later killed by state wildlife officials as it left his house.
• Rebecca Rivera and her girlfriend, Dania Amezquita-Gomez, were arrested on an accusation of evidence tampering after a body that washed up on a beach in Galveston, Texas eight months ago was identified as Rivera's 4-year-old son, police said.
