Group of doctors marks 125th year

The Arkansas Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Association observed its Quasquicentennial (125th) anniversary with a celebration June 16 in the ballroom of the Embassy Suites Little Rock.

"Honoring the Past and Embracing the Future" was the theme of the event, which topped off the group's 125th scientific session and began with a sit-down dinner. A visual highlight of the event was the AMDPA/University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Wall of Fame, featuring graduation photos of black doctors, dentists and pharmacists throughout the years as well as historic photos of association activities and celebrations.

Dr. William Greenfield, immediate past president of the association, greeted guests, while Dr. Tommy Love presented a video time-capsule documentary about the association. State Sen. Linda Chesterfield offered a short but dynamic dinner speech after her introduction by Dr. Harold Betton.

After special recognition and presentations by Dr. Billy Thomas, and closing remarks by association president Dr. Lanita White, attendees moved to a closed-off segment of the ballroom, decorated Harlem Renaissance-style and offering Las Vegas-style "gambling" along with entertainment by the Rodney Block Collective and vocalist Bijoux.

With a membership consisting of black physicians, dentists and doctors of pharmacy, the Arkansas Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Association has as its mission "to serve as the essential resource for its members and their patients toward ensuring professional excellence, promoting social justice, and realizing health equity in Arkansas."
