Police: Arkansas man killed after car veers off state highway, strikes ditch

A southeast Arkansas man died after the car he was driving veered of a highway Saturday afternoon and traveled into a ditch, state police said.

The single-vehicle wreck happened around 4:15 p.m. as 56-year-old Theo Bell of Dumas was traveling north on Arkansas 159 in the Desha County town of Mitchellville, according to a preliminary report.

Police say Bell suffered fatal injuries when the 2006 Ford Taurus veered off the highway and hit a nearby ditch. No one else was reported hurt.

The weather was described as clear and roads were said to be dry at the time.

At least 216 deaths have been recorded this year in traffic crashes on Arkansas roads, according to preliminary figures.
