Education Board to visit El Dorado
Deviating from standard practice, the Arkansas Board of Education will spend Wednesday in El Dorado, before meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality auditorium in North Little Rock to conduct regular business.
Education Board members will leave from the Arkansas Department of Education shortly after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday for El Dorado. Once there, they are scheduled to tour Washington Middle School and El Dorado High School.
The board will have lunch and dinner in El Dorado before returning to Little Rock.
March meeting off for School Board
The March 13 regular monthly business meeting of the School Board for the Pulaski County Special School District has been canceled because of necessary absences of several of the seven board members and the possible lack of a quorum.
All agenda items that would have been handled in March will be added to the board's April 10 agenda, School Board President Linda Remele said.
The board will meet March 12 to conduct two employee hearings and on March 27 to review applicants for superintendent.
Festival to focus on agricultural projects
Lisa Academy charter-school system is hosting its fourth annual Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Festival on Friday at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock's Donaghey Student Center.
The festival will start at 10:30 a.m. and will showcase more than 100 projects done by students in fifth through 12th grades that are centered on agricultural topics.
More than 2,000 students from surrounding school districts are expected to attend the festival. Along with the projects, there will be a petting zoo and a tractor on display.
Guest speakers include Attorney General Leslie Rutledge, Lt. Governor Tim Griffin and Arkansas Education Commissioner Johnny Key.
Texarkana schools win national honors
Union da Vinci Magnet School, Kilpatrick Bio-Medical Engineering Magnet School and North Heights Junior High Entrepreneurial Leadership Academy -- all in the Texarkana School District -- were recently named National Magnet Schools of Distinction by Magnet Schools of America, the national association for magnet and theme-based schools.
Texarkana's College Hill Academy of Design was named Magnet School of Excellence by the national organization.
The association's awards program honors the top magnet schools in the United States for their commitment to high academic standards, curriculum innovation, successful desegregation and diversity efforts, and consistent delivery of high-quality educational services.
