Talk keys on desks for pupils in Africa

The chief executive officer of an organization working to provide desks for children in sub-Saharan Africa will speak Monday.

The Desmond Tutu Tutudesk Campaign Center was created to address the shortage of 95 million desks in Africa by setting a goal of providing 20 million "Tutudesks" to 20 million children by 2020.

The Tutudesk is an environmentally friendly, light and portable desk that children can use at school and home, in regular classrooms or under trees.

Thandeka Tutu-Gxashe, CEO of the organization, will speak at 6 p.m. Monday at the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service's Sturgis Hall, 1200 President Clinton Ave.

The aim of providing the desks is to improve the lives of African children and make Africa a more globally competitive continent through education.

Tutu-Gxashe has lived in the United Kingdom, Swaziland, Botswana and the U.S. She is the daughter of South African Anglican cleric and human-rights activist Desmond Tutu.
