• Evoni "Nini" Williams, 18, a server at a diner in La Marque, Texas, received an unexpected $16,000 scholarship from Texas Southern University after a photo appeared on social media of her helping a struggling elderly customer by cutting up his food so he could eat.

• Tom Perciavalle, deputy fire chief in McKeesport, Pa., said a cat named Oddball raced into a bedroom where its owners were sound asleep, waking them up and alerting them to a fire in their home, which didn't have smoke alarms.

• Stephanie Pruett, 28, a married high school history teacher in Weaver, Ala., who also taught a course titled "Bible as Literature," was arrested on charges of being sexually involved with a 17-year-old student since October, investigators said.

• Kenneth Minnes, a rookie New Jersey state trooper who was off duty when he happened upon a car wreck, fashioned a tourniquet out of a T-shirt and part of a tree branch to save the life of a woman whose arm was severely bleeding.

• William Dunbar, 23, of Berlin, Pa., who pleaded guilty to threatening to kill Vice President Mike Pence while on duty at an Army National Guard training center, was sentenced to six months in prison, home detention and was ordered to seek mental health treatment.

• Dallas Lott, 64, of Tomball, Texas, unhappy that the house next door was put on the market, faces a felony criminal-mischief charge for filling the home's locks with metal pins and sealing them with glue, as well as spray-painting windows and destroying for-sale signs, prosecutors said.

• Charles Hood, San Antonio's fire chief, said an 18-year-old girl who got stuck when she tried to crawl through a small circular opening in a cave while on a high school field trip, was rescued by emergency personnel after spending about 10 hours trapped.
