Farmington blanks Mena in tourney opener

FARMINGTON -- Farmington, Bentonville West, Conway and Cabot were winners on the first day of the Farmington Invitational Softball tournament on Friday.

The host Lady Cardinals opened tournament play with a bang, rolling to a 12-0 win against Mena.

Farmington scored six runs in the first inning sparked by the bat of starting pitcher Paige Devecsery, who smashed a two-run double to start the scoring. Carley Antwine, who was 3-for-3, capped off the six-run inning with a double that brought in two more runs for a 6-0 Farmington lead.

Devecsery (3-1) was stingy in the circle, allowing no runs on one hit through four innings. She recorded five strikeouts with no walks.

Farmington added six more runs in the third inning. Paige Anderson, Shayley Treat, Kally Stout, Alyssa Reed, and Camryn Journagan each drove in runs as the Lady Cardinals matched their first-inning output.

Autumn Powell took the loss for Mena, allowing 12 runs on nine hits striking out one in three innings.

"Both teams played really good," said Farmington coach Randy Osnes. "They (Mena) rode the bus four hours. That makes a difference. We pitched strikes. Paige Devecsery pitched a great ball game. (Catcher) Alyssa Reed made a great play on the plate right in front of her, our shortstop made great plays. Really it was all of them. That's the fourth game this week they've played. All of the girls worked really hard. I'm proud of them."

The tournament will continue today with the championship game scheduled for 8 p.m.

Conway 11, Prairie Grove 5

Conway jumped all over Prairie Grove with eight runs in the Wampus Cats' opening at-bat which was more than enough in Conway's victory over the Lady Tigers.

Cabot 10, Gravette 5

Cabot led 5-4 going into the fifth inning and put up five runs on the way to a win over Gravette in a first-round game of the Farmington Invitational Softball Tournament Friday. Senior Ashlyn Spears picked up the win for Cabot. Spears allowed five runs on six hits and struck out five.

Sophomores played large roles for both teams.

Cabot sophomore Riley Walthall went 3-for-4 smacking a pair of doubles and driving in two runs.

Sophomore Lexi Gerner took the loss for Gravette. She allowed seven runs on six hits. Sophomore Bailey Elmore (2-for-3) homered for the Lady Lions and drove in three runs.
